Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
There will be no school on Monday (the 16th) as we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On Wednesday we will have an assembly in Mike Martin Gym for grades 6-12 honoring Dr. King.  “At the Table with Dr. King” is a music and drama presentation that captures the essence of Dr. King’s time in the Montgomery jail. The schedule for Wednesday is:

Tickets on Sale for Winter Ball
It’s time to “Set Sail” for the Winter Ball to be held on February 4th at the MOHAI in Seattle.
This year there will be two different ticket prices. The first: $45.00 per ticket and an arrival time of 8:00 p.m. which includes admission to the museum and dancing. The second: $55.00 per ticket and an arrival time of 7:00 p.m. which includes admission to the museum, dancing, and dinner. The dinner includes pasta, chicken, Caesar salad, garlic bread and dessert served family style with your table group. Tickets will be sold until Wednesday, January 18th. Cash, check, and credit card are all accepted. Table group sign up forms are in Mrs. White’s office and are due on the 20th. She will also have photo order forms which will be handed to the photographer at the dance. Parking is limited at the MOHAI so carpooling is suggested. Dress is semi-formal attire (girls, make sure to dress modestly). Grab a date or a group of friends and join us. Either way, it will be a night you won’t want to miss!

College Seminar Night for Juniors and Their Parents
Please join us on Thursday, January 19th at 7:00 in Schirmer Auditorium for College Seminar Night. This is an important evening for juniors and parents to attend. Mrs. Lewis will be presenting on Naviance (our online college planning tool), visiting colleges and what the process will look like from now until senior year. We will also be joined by a representative from the University of Washington and Kaplan Test Prep to share more specifics on the application process and standardized testing and PSAT results. This is our main information event for juniors in their college process. Please contact Mrs. Lewis ([email protected]) with any questions.

Chapel Next Friday
Next Friday, January 20th, we will be having an optional chapel. Our guest is the musical artist Thi’sl (https://twitter.com/Thisl) and we are excited to have him with us. His bio says: “At the corner of street life and honest living stands Thi’sl: an ex-hustler turned urban missionary. A look into his past reveals the authenticity of his gritty, in your face lyrics and God’s grace, which spared his life and gave him a clean slate to begin anew.” Students may attend this optional Chapel or choose to have a study hall or meet with a teacher to prepare for final exams.

On to State!
Last Tuesday 61 King’s High School DECA students competed in the Area Competition at the Lynnwood Convention Center. There were approximately 650 students representing 13 schools in our area. The Knights had a great day with 30 of our students advancing to the state competition in early March. Students competed in 13 categories with five students from each category advancing to State. We are happy to report that King’s swept the Hotel & Lodging category! Congratulations to first place winners Jamie Edwards, Drew Brennan, Abby Weeks, Einya Densmore, Kendall Walsh, Lexi Nguyen and John Wang; second place winners Imogene Schildwachter, Ben Haberman, Timothy Billing, Emma Tornow, Grace Hutcheson, Sam Burns and Caleb Scheeval; third place winners Anisa Harcrow, Ryan Bjorg, Danny Bogen, Jeffrey Weber and Joanne Yi; fourth place winners Cristina Cavero, Hayden Kirkpatrick, Rachel Cameron and Jamesen Ward; and fifth place winners Sarah Amano, Maxwell Loop, Jack Zhou, Carson Sharpe, Megan Cooper, Nii Engmann and Olivia Hjelle!

Feeling Ill?
As you may know, there is a good deal of illness in our community. If your son or daughter has a fever, or has been experiencing symptoms of the flu, please keep them home from school. With the end of the term and final exams approaching fast, we want to keep our community as healthy as possible.

And Speaking of Final Exams…
The end-of-semester final exams will be held on Wednesday, January 25th, Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th. School is dismissed at 12:30 on January 27th and there is no school on Monday, January 30th and Tuesday, January 31st. Final exams need to be taken on the day and time scheduled.  Students are not permitted to take early or late finals except in cases of illness or exceptional circumstances.  Exceptions must be pre-approved by the principal.  Family vacations do not constitute exceptional circumstances.  Non-approved absences result in a “0” grade on the final exam.  During final exams, students are required to be in classes like regular school days.  The regular school attendance policy will apply to all absences.

Attendance Appeals Due February 8th
If you have received notification that your student has exceeded the number of allowable absences and you wish to appeal those absences, “Attendance Appeal” forms are available from Mrs. Kelly. The deadline to appeal absences for this semester is Wednesday, February 8th. Appeals received after the deadline will not be considered. As a reminder, the Attendance Policy is below.

King’s High School Attendance Policy

Tardies – Up to 5 minutes late blocks 1-4, up to 20 minutes late flex block

  • A maximum of (3) tardies each 9 week grading period in blocks 1-4 is allowed.
  • A maximum of (5) tardies each 9 week grading period in flex block is allowed.
  • There are no excused or unexcused tardies…tardy is tardy. If school personnel write a note excusing a student, then they are not marked tardy.
  • Once a student exceeds the maximum allowed number of tardies, the student must make up 20 minutes of time in lunch detention for each succeeding tardy.
  • Tardies cannot be appealed.

Excessive Absences – Both excused and unexcused count toward this total. The only absences that don’t count toward the total are school related absences

  • A maximum of (6) absences each 9 week grading period in blocks1-4 and flex block is allowed.
  • Once a student exceeds the maximum allowed number of absences, the student must make up 1 hour of time in Saturday School for each succeeding absence. There is a $5.00 per hour fee for Saturday School which will be added to your school bill.
  • Excessive absences can be appealed once during your high school career.

Unexcused Absences – Parents have two school days to excuse an absence by phone, e-mail, or note. After two school days have passed since the absence, it can no longer be excused. It is the responsibility of the student to confirm with the school office that all absences have been excused by a parent within two school days.

  • Any unexcused absence will result in ZERO credit for classes missed.
  • Unexcused absences cannot be appealed.

Prearranged Absences—Any time a student knows they will be absent for two or more days they should fill out a prearranged absence form in advance. Forms can be picked up from Mrs. White in the main office.

With the New Year come new SCRIP TO GO hours!  SCRIP TO GO will still be available for purchase on campus with new hours on Mondays from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. There will be no SCRIP order on Monday Jan 16th since school is not in session. SCRIP TO GO will be on sale on Thursday Jan 19 from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.  The next order deadline will be Monday January 23rd at 8:15 a.m. Orders and payments must be received by then to be included.  If you are paying by check, payment should be left in the SCRIP drop box located in the back hallway off the high school library.  PCC Scrip cards are reloadable at the store for rebate. We must have your card numbers on file to ensure you get credit for the reloads. Please email your PCC Scrip card numbers to [email protected].  PCC reload rebates are credited twice per year.

King’s Open Houses – Invite your friends!
As we enter the enrollment season for the 2017-18 school year, we could use your help to spread the word about King’s.  Please invite your friends to attend an upcoming open house. Because so many of our referrals come from King’s families, we offer the Win-Win Program for our domestic students. The Win-Win program is designed to thank King’s families for referring friends and families.  A tuition discount of $500 per new student is available.
